Spikers 4-0 in FML

Last Thursday, the Oxford Varsity girls volleyball team fulfilled their goal of getting revenge on the Fenton Tigers.
Coach Kristi McDevitt said the Wildcats were looking to make their mark in the league as ‘the team to beat? by knocking off last year’s Flint Metro League champs, winning 25-20, 25-23, 28-26 and 25-14.
Junior Brittany Moncrieff led the charge with 17 kills, 23 digs; senior Karlyn Stroope had 14 kills; offense’s senior Rachael Precour had nine kills, while seniors Morgan Stefanski, Kelsey Giradot and Alexandra Johnson each had six kills.
Great defense was played by senior captain Jacqui Sylva, who had 20 digs and was 21 for 25 in passing; sophomore Taylor Carpenter had 13 digs and was 6 for 6 in passing; Stefanski finished the night with 18 digs; senior captain Laura Brown had 18 kill assists.
The win improved Oxford’s overall record to 11-4-1 and 4-0 in the FML.
On Saturday, the girls traveled to Goodrich for the Earlybird Volleyball Tournament, finishing 4-1-1 for the day, with a loss in the semi-finals to North Branch.
The Wildcats defeated Holly, Flint Kearsley and Lake Fenton in pool play, and then defeated Yale in the quarterfinals before North Branch.
‘We had a strong day, played some great volleyball and had some absolute brilliant moments as a team on the court,? McDevitt said.
Stroope finished in the lead offensively, with 54 kills; Moncrieff had 39 kills and 62 digs; Jacqui Sylva had 74 digs on the day. Brown finished with 66 kill assists for her setting skills.
The tournament improved the Wildcat’s record to 15-5-2 overall. The girls face the Lapeer East Eagles on Thursday at 7 p.m.
