In a high school full of outstanding academic performers, two seniors stood out among the rest and were named to the Flint Metro League’s Academic All Conference first and second team.
Lindsay Stairs and Corey Young were nominated based on a formula that combines their grade point average from the all of the semesters in high school through their first half of their senior year and their ACT or SAT score.
Each score was multiplied by a set number and then added together to form the student’s overall score.
Stairs was nominated for the FML Academic first team. After graduating from Oxford, Stairs will be attending the University of Pennsylvania’s College of Arts and Science, where she plans on majoring in astrophysics.
She wrote that ‘nothing intrigues her more than the vastness of space,? and that she hopes to continue on to graduate school and one day get a job working for NASA.
While at Oxford, Stairs served as the Treasurer for the Senior class student council, was a member of the National Honor Society, played softball for two years and was the Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper her junior year.
When she is not studying hard, she likes to be involved in her church’s youth group and likes to volunteer her time. She is also an active participant in church plays and helped out with Vacation Bible School.
Second team all academic honors went to Corey Young, who wants to become an Areospace Engineer and work for NASA.
After graduating from Oxford, Young plans on attending either Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida or Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida.
Young wrote that ‘he is the type of person who likes to figure out how things work, and, as a result, wants to become an aerospace engineer to learn and understand the fundamentals of rockets and space flight.?
While at Oxford, Young participated in numerous activities. He was a member of the National Honor Society, participated on Varsity Golf, Varsity Bowling, Freshman Baseball and Varsity Quiz Bowl. He also participated in the Adventure Club, Math Club, SADD and Spanish Club.
Young was also chosen by OHS to be their ‘Brightest and Best? for WXYZ-TV/Channel 7’s brightest and best segment that will air throughout the summer. He was selected based on his highest overall and combined GPA and ACT test scores.
Young has volunteered countless hours of his time with various organizations in Oxford. He worked at the National Honor Society blood drives, stocked shelves and bagged groceries at the Oxford/Orion FISH, assisted at Santa breakfasts at Echo Grove Salvation Army Camp, volunteered at elementary schools and tutored students in math, science and Spanish.
