Facing a seven-point deficit going into the second day of the Oakland County wrestling meet at Clarkston High School, the Wolves knew other teams were gunning for them.
Trailing the leader Lake Orion 134-125 after Friday’s opening round, the Wolves sat only 17 points ahead of Oxford and 20 above Milford, but they prevailed. Clarkston recovered and pulled out a win over the Dragons 291-269.5 and earned its sixth consecutive county championship.
‘It was nice to see them put in a pressure situation,? said Clarkston Coach Joe DeGain.
‘We were in a position where every match counted and they kept winning when we needed it.?
‘This is probably the closest one in five years. The kids just kept wrestling hard’they knew how close it was,? said Assistant Coach Derek Moscovic.
‘It’s nice to bring another Oakland County championship, we take a lot of pride in that.?
The win is Clarkston’s 11th overall and fourth under Head Coach Joe DeGain. Clarkston began its streak while DeGain’s father, Mike, was at the helm in 2001. Hazel Park
