Students take over as principal, custodian

School was extra exciting last month for three Good Shepherd Lutheran School students, as they took over the school on Nov. 29.
Kindgartener Nathan Eccles served as the school’s custodian for the afternoon, while the sister-brother combo of third grader Hanna Clark and sixth grader Bryce Clark teamed up to be the school’s principal.
The students won these opportunities after their parents bid on the items in the school’s silent auction earlier that month. According to Principal Nancy Burgeson, in total, the auction raised about $9,000 for the school.
‘It was a fun afternoon for me and the kids were great,? Burgeson said.
Before spending the afternoon hard at work, the students took a limo ride and went out to lunch with Burgeson and custodian John Teregan to Rainforest Cafe.
‘I liked the limo,? Nathan said.
‘It was cool,? Hanna added. ‘We got to listen to music and have pop.?
According to Burgeson, the limo service was through J.A.M.’N Limo, Inc., out of Clarkston, and was the only limo company she could get to accommodate the kids and the short time limit that they needed. She added that she, and the kids, were very thankful to the company.
After fueling up on energy at lunch, the group came back to so the kids could get to work.
Nathan cleaned the floor and emptied garbage baskets, both tasks he deemed as ‘fun.?
Bryce and Hanna did principal rounds, answered phones, sent faxes and even got to discipline a few children.
‘They were in the hall without passes,? Hanna explained.
Bryce also got to make announcements over the intercom, to which Burgeson called him a ‘natural.?
‘I definitely think we have a couple of principal wannabees,? Burgeson said. ‘They did an outstanding job.?
Both kids have given becoming a principal a thought and decided that they might want to become one. Other ideas for careers for Bryce are a basketball player, and Hanna, a rock star or soccer player, but being a principal is also high on the list.
All three kids thanked their parents for bidding on the items.
‘Actually one of the faxes we sent was a thank you to our parents,? Bryce said.
‘There are lots and lots of thank yous,? he added. ‘We couldn’t stop smiling where ever we went — at least I couldn’t.?
Also as part of the auction, the school had some teachers for a day, where the student got to develop a lesson plan and teach not only their classmates, but also their teacher.
