Summer readers log 2,960 hours

Thanks to the Oxford Public Library hundreds of kids continued reading and learning over summer vacation ? and had loads of fun doing it.
A whopping 405 children ages 3? to 11 signed up for the library’s six-week Kids Summer Reading Program. Of that total, 258 kids (or 64 percent) read at least one hour during June and July for a combined total of 2,960 hours ? the equivalent of 123 days.
‘Research shows children who read over the summer don’t get as far behind in school,? said Shae Smith, Head of the library’s Children’s Department.
Jessica Ojeda, 10, was the summer program’s top reader logging an incredible 168 hours. She was the top reader last year with 127 hours.
Alana Whims, 10, was the Number Two reader with 90 hours, while 6-year-old Piper Aldrich rounded out the top three with 66 hours.
A total of 902 kids attended the Summer Reading Program’s various weekly events and activities, according to Smith.
