There’s a new photographer in Oxford

The perfect picture requires the right equipment, proper lighting and a skilled photographer.
At Johnston Photography, customers are guaranteed all three elements.
Located at 8 N. Washington (the former home of Mel Pawl and Company Photography), the new portrait studio features the talents of owner and local photographer Dorothy Johnston.
Johnston, an eight-year Oxford resident, is ready to meet all the area’s photo needs from high school senior pictures to family portraits to professional photos for business purposes.
“I’m basically doing the same work as the Pawls’ studio,” she said.
Offering customers photos with a “fresh, new, modern look” is one of Johnston’s top goals.
However, she promises to still maintain “the same high quality of work” as the Pawls.
Johnston said she particularly enjoys shooting portraits of high school seniors.
“The high school seniors are great to work with. They’re a lot of fun,” she said.
Shooting photos on location is one of Johnston’s favorite experiences.
For instance, last week she traveled to the Oakland County International Airport to photograph a high school student with his airplane.
“I like to give the kids something different from other photographers,” she said.
During the month of August, Johnston is offering high school seniors a 35 percent discount on a delux session (the most popular package), which includes a minimum of three outfit changes, variety of backgrounds and different shots such as full-length and close-ups.
Johnston said her studio will feature the “same cool backgrounds” and the “same lighting” as the Pawls’ studio.
Johnston’s been working in the commercial photography field – doing both automotive and portrait work – since graduating from the Center for Creative Studies in 1990.
“It’s just so cool when you can focus on your passion,” she said. “I’ve done this sort of work for quite a while. It’s exciting.”
Johnston Photography is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. – 5p.m., Wednesday 9 a.m. – 7 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. The studio’s closed Sunday and Monday.
