Tom Toteff is now the proud holder of a United States Patent for his invention ‘FASTRAC.?
‘I knew there wasn’t anything else out there like it,? said the owner of Tom’s Hardware in Oxford. ‘It’s pretty exciting. It’s definitely different than retail.?
FASTRAC is an adjustable tie-down system Toteff invented for securing and transporting dirt bikes, motorcycles, ATVs and snowmobiles.
The system consists of four-foot pieces of metal trac, double or single trac wheel chocks (or single trac custom ones for smaller bikes), and tie down clips, each rated to hold 1,000 pounds.
Each item is sold separately so as to allow users the opportunity to custom fit the FASTRAC system to their specific needs without purchasing any unnecessary or extra pieces, according to Toteff.
Since 2004, Toteff said he’s sold more than 1,000 individual pieces of FASTRAC. ‘It’s taken off. There’s been a lot of word-of-mouth,? he said.
In addition to Toteff’s hardware store, FASTRAC is now sold at Wheels USA (Oxford), Lake Orion Truck Accessories, Mazza Auto Parts (Waterford, Clarkston and Ortonville), Lapeer Honda and Voz Cycle City in Niagra Falls, New York.
Outside Michigan, FASTRAC has been sold to customers in California, Iowa, Texas, Florida, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Canada.
Now that he holds the patent, Toteff plans to increase production of FASTRAC and market it nationwide.
‘It’s going to really snowball now,? he said. ‘Within two years, I’m hoping to produce and sell a million pieces a year. Nationwide, I think we can move that many pieces with the proper marketing.?
‘And if we end up worldwide, we do.?
