Area snowmobilers don’t need to head north to enjoy the pleasures of winter. Bald Mountain Recreation Area has seven miles of marked trails used for snowmobiling.
They are located on the north side of Greenshield Road, east of Perry Acres subdivision and west of Kern Road in Lake Orion.
In addition, snowmobiles are permitted throughout the 3,000 acres of the park, except on the sledding hills, designated cross country ski trails and county road.
Park manager Bob Remer also advises that snowmobilers should stay off the lakes in the park. Because the lakes are spring-fed, they may be open in spots throughout the winter.
All snowmobiles are required to have a state trails permit. The permit can be obtained at snowmobile dealerships and such retail stores as Kmart, Meijer and Dunhams.
A Michigan State Park Motor Vehicle permit is also required for all snowmobiles and vehicles entering the park.
The fee is $6 for a daily permit or $24 for an annual permit (good for all state parks in Michigan).
Other restrictions are:
n A minimum of four inches of snow is required for snowmobiling.
n Park hours are 8 a.m.-10 p.m.
n Snowmobiles only. No ORVs are allowed.
n Snowmobiles must abide by all other state park rules and regulations.
Remer says novice snowmobilers might enjoy the open spaces of the park rather than sticking to the trails. He suggests they stop by the park headquarters on Greenshield Road to find out what areas are suited to their abilities.
