On Tuesday, Sept. 11, Lake Orion village residents will get a chance to visit the polls and elect four individuals to the Village Council.
Council President William Siver, President Pro Tem Kenneth Van Portfliet and council members Robert Hollenbeck and Douglas Dendel all have terms that are expiring, leaving four vacated seats.
Van Portfliet has filed paperwork to put his name on the Sept. 11 ballot and will be running for re-election, while Siver and Hollenbeck decided not to pursue reelection.
As part of his role as president, along with attending Village Council meetings, Siver also served on the Village of Lake Orion Planning Commission and the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Board.
All of those meetings mean a huge time commitment and after many years on the council, Siver said that he’s looking forward to moving on pursue other interests.
Hollenbeck, who served from 1993 to 1996 and then again starting in 2001, said that he is happy to see how many things the council has accomplished, but is ready for a break.
He plans to spend some time traveling and didn’t feel that it would be fair to the voters if he wasn’t able to be at all the meetings.
‘You need to be there all the time to represent the people of Lake Orion,? he said. ‘It’s time to let someone else do it for a while.?
Hollenbeck does plan on staying involved by volunteering with the DDA.
Dendel did not file paperwork by deadline to put his name on the ballot, and has not decided whether he will run as a write-in candidate. He has until Aug. 31 at 4 p.m. to make that decision.
Village residents David Churchill, Robert Reetz and Ron Zilka have all filed nominating petitions and will round out the ballot on Sept. 11.
According to Village Clerk Arlene Nichols, the three candidates receiving the highest number of votes shall be elected for a four year term, while the candidate receiving the fourth highest number of votes shall be elected for a two year term.
