Earlier this month, winners of the Wally’s Service Project Scholarship were announced during the annual Garden Party fundraiser at Clarkston Family Farm.
Awardees include Clarkston High School’s Maggie Walkowiak who won $1,100 and Oxford High School’s Nicholas Hatzigeorgiou who won $500.
In the fall Walkowiak plans study secondary education at Grand Valley State University and Hatzigeorgiou expects to study biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan.
The annual scholarship was open to students in Avondale, Brandon, Clarkston, Pontiac, Lake Orion, Oxford and Waterford who planned to attend a college or university or vocational school.
Students were asked to design a service project or event that could be implemented and benefit the local community, a demographic group or the community’s environment.
Entries were judged by project description clarity, project feasibility, project originality, specificity and project impact. — M.K.
