Cagers honored seven players and defeated Farmington on Senior Night last Friday.
“It’s a good group of seniors to celebrate tonight,” said Tim Wasilk, head coach for Clarkston Boys Varsity Basketball. “It has been good having those guys in our program. It’s been a great experience.”
The Wolves opened their 53-39 win with seven points with baskets from seniors Zach Austin and Nate Steinman and a 3-point shot from Keegan Wasilk.
Farmington fought back scoring two back-to-back fields goals and adding seven more points to close the quarter with a 13-10 lead. Then, opened the second quarter with one point on the free throw line.
Steinman closed the gap down to 1-point on a 3-point shot and with a basket from Austin, the Wolves led 15-14.
Not to be outdone, Farmington scored three points just for the Wolves to go on a 14-point run with contributions from Steinman, Austin, junior Brayden Wiley, sophomore Brody Kosin and freshman John Kaul, finishing the first half with a 29-17 lead.
“It wasn’t pretty, but we will take it,” Wasilk said. “We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, didn’t defend particularly well at times. But, we figured it out tonight given the different line ups and playing different guys and making it work. Keegan played for the first time in like five games. Having him back in the line up is a transition for our guys as well because he hasn’t been in the line up. We had some different line ups we haven’t used in a while but it was good for the kids to get out there and play. It was good.”
Steinman led with 19 points with two field goals and had nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Austin had 18 points and six rebounds. Wasilk had seven points with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sophomore Zack Scherler had four rebounds.
“Zack came in tonight and us some good minutes,” he said. “It was good.”
Wasilk added the game will prepare the players for playoffs starting next week.
“It’s just finding continuity with our guys right now,” he said, adding some players are injured. “Some guys are coming back. Some guys get hurt and then come back. We are just trying to find that continuity. It’s been good at times and other times it’s been tough. We are definitely gaining depth. All the guys are playing and getting them ready to play. It’s creating depth for the program and helpfully it will help going into this week and playoffs with guys who are stepping up and maybe wouldn’t have had a chance.”
The Wolves opened last week with a 51-50 loss against Rochester Adams. Wiley led with 17 points with three rebounds. Austin had 14 points with five rebounds and two assists. Steinman had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Wolves (11-7, 5-5 OAA Red) opened this week against North Farmington. They play Ferndale in their final home game of the regular season.
“Both those teams are right at the top of our league,” said Wasilk. “It will be to good competitive teams for us. Then, into playoffs.”
The Wolves play in the MHSAA Boys Basketball Division 1 District 6 Semifinal on March 9, 5:30 p.m.
The district includes Waterford Mott, Waterford Kettering, Avondale and Pontiac.
“It’s doesn’t really matter who we are playing it’s about getting us ready to play,” Wasilk said. “Teams will be ready to play us because of what Coach (Dan) Fife has built here. It’s a matter of getting us ready and taking care of us.”
The district final is Friday, March 11 at 7 p.m. All games are at Waterford Mott.
