It’s an exciting time for Clarkston Varsity Baseball as they hit the field in their season opener last week.
“I am looking forward to watching the kids play and grow as a team,” said Addison Turk, head coach. “I think it’s going to be an exciting year.”
The Wolves opened the season with a 7-4 loss at West Bloomfield, April 5. Ben Bacon had one hit and Luc Brumm had one RBI had one RBI during the game.
Before the game, Turk added everybody was looking forward to going against the Lakers just to get the season rolling.
As for the season, Turk said, “the expectations are pretty high. We have a lot of returning starters and a really good senior class.”
Four players of the senior class, Brumm, Trevor Busyn, Brady Krzciok and Lucas McKinney, have already signed their letters of intent to continue playing baseball on the collegiate level after graduating in June.
“When you have talent like that – that’s where the expectations come in,” said Turk, adding they have quite a few juniors to the team including returning juniors Mason King and Ryan Witt. “We are going to expect a lot out of them given the fact they already have a year of varsity experience. We are going to rely on some of the other juniors to step up and fill some roles.”
The top goals for the season include playing their best baseball by the end of the year and winning the OAA Red league championship.
“I think with this team winning the league should be at the top of our list,” said Turk. “It’s a tough league. Every team in the league is talented. I think that should be the goal going into every year. Every series we play is competitive. If you don’t show up and play your best you probably aren’t going to win.”
He added it helps the players know it’s going to be competitive.
“We learned so much last year because the year prior our kids didn’t have any varsity experience because of COVID,” Turk said. “They learned a lot just by knowing they need to be at their best for every series in order to compete for a league title.”
He added the players also learned a lot from the district playoffs last year.
“Our district run last year really showed them what it takes to be champions,” he said. “By the end of the year we were playing our best baseball. Our record didn’t indicate the type of talent we had. By the end of the year we really improved and they learned a lot that weekend on what it takes to go to the next level.”
The Wolves don’t start league play until Monday, April 18 against Stoney Creek so they have an opportunity to get some games under their belt.
“We have games before league ball starts to really start playing our best and for the coaches to figure out what is the best line up we can put out there,” Turk said. “We are going to use these couple weeks to observe which players are playing the best going into the first series against Stoney Creek.”
The Wolves opened this week against Grand Blanc and Troy Athens. They head to Bloomfield Hills on Wednesday, 4:30 p.m.
They host their home opener on Friday against Berkley, 4:30 p.m. Then, they host Stoney Creek on Monday, April 18 in a double header beginning at 4 p.m. The series continues on Wednesday, April 20 at Stoney Creek.
