Within a span of two minutes junior Emerson Wood struck with two goals to put the Clarkston Girls Varsity Soccer team up 2-0 in the first half over Waterford Mott last Friday night during Senior Night and Kids Night.
Two more goals from sophomore Kennedy Mareches and junior Micaela Holbein in the second half closed the night, 4-0.
“It’s good to get a shutout on Senior Night while recognizing four excellent seniors,” said Damian Huffer, head coach. “Three of them are captains and as captains they lead by example for everybody. They received the recognition they deserve on a pretty busy night. It brought out a lot of kids as well. It’s good on both accounts. It gives them a big crowd which is a great send off and it gives kids a chance to get excited about what might be done the road for them when they go to Clarkston. It’s a really good event. The turnout was excellent.
“It was a good game from the standing point we were able to give players plenty of minutes and really get everyone in there on a good night.”
The Wolves controlled the game keeping the ball in Mott’s turf and making shots on the net.
Wood’s first goal went in with 18:24 left in the first half with an assist from senior Emmy Horn. The Wolves made another attempt on the net but the goalie saved it from going in.
Holbein crossed the ball to Wood less than two minutes later for another goal to put the Wolves up.
“They were good,” Huffer said about the goals. “Slick moves from back to front really quick. Great finishes and great to see. When Emerson is in full flow she is an absolute gazelle. She is such an athletic kid. It was two really good finishes and two good goals to set us on our way. It worked out perfectly.”
He added it was a good night for everyone and a bonus was everyone came out injury free.
“It’s a good night to send Waterford seniors off as well and all the best in their district,” Huffer said.
The Wolves lost to Oxford on May 10, 4-1, to come in second place in the OAA White.
“We had so many chances,” said Huffer. “We just had a five minute spell they had three and then we literally could have had 5-6 in the second half. We just didn’t take our chances. Credit to Oxford. There was no reason to head our heads in shame. We move on. It’s a resilient group so they bounce back quite quickly. It’s good to see.
The Wolves (9-4-1) host Rochester Adams on Thursday and host Davison on Friday, wrapping the regular season.
“A couple of tough games,” Huffer said. “We have Adams who is a really good team and we have Davison who we could potentially meet again in districts.”
JV begins at 5:30 p.m., varsity follows.
Clarkston will see Oxford again in the first round of the MHSAA Girls Soccer Division 1 District 5 competition at Lake Orion High School. Date and time to be announced.
