More school renovations and roadwork are coming to town in 2020.
At the Independence Township Board of Trustees regular meeting, Sept. 10, Supervisor Pat Kittle gave the details. Clarkston High School will have some building renovations starting the summer of 2020, and the Waldon Road parking lot will be renovated at the same time. The township will also redo Walters and Flemings Lake Roads under a millage.
“The road commission made the recommendation to the township to delay that particular part of the 14 miles of work in 2020 until 2021, until the school is done and then we can do it during summer break so we don’t disrupt that 2,000-plus kids,” Kittle said.
He met with the road commission regarding the 2020 road millage project and said quotes are currently out for 14 miles of resurfacing Walters and Flemings Lake. The bid opening will be Sept. 24. The original road commission cost estimate was $6.7 million, with the township’s contribution locked at $5.8 million.
“That’s consistent with our millage collections,” said Kittle. “The revised estimate is $7.5 million due to additional requirements they’re finding upon their due diligence and spending more time working through the details. RCOC will pay everything above the $5.8 million township contribution. So this is good news for us.”
The construction period is going to be scheduled from May through October of 2020, said Kittle.
