25 years ago – 1997
It’s yes: A proposal for a new elementary schools and renovations at most existing buildings was narrowly approved by Clarkston voters. The $57,650,00 bond proposal passed 2,897 to 2,676. Results were received around 9:25 p.m. during the regularly scheduled Clarkston Community Schools Board of Education meeting. A similar proposal had failed in December with a smaller turnout.

50 years ago – 1972
Traffic signal “essential” at Dixie – Maybee corner: An all-out campaign to get a traffic light installed at Dixie Highway and Maybee Road won the endorsement of the Independence Township Board. Some 700 residents of the nearby areas signed petitions which they hoped would encourage the Michigan State Highway Department to heed their request. Information from the Traffic Improvement Association of Oakland County showed 12 accidents in 1971 and 15 accidents in 1970.

75 years ago – 1947
Commencement Wednesday night: A large crowd gathered in the auditorium of the Clarkston school to see 49 graduates receive their diplomas. Kenneth Hempsted, salutatorian, spoke on “The Future of Seniors: Yesterday and Today.” He went back to the year 1920 and compared the problems facing the graduates that year to those of current graduates. Katherine LaPlante, valedictorian, gave a fine talk on “What the Future Holds.” She used as the theme of her talk “Off we go, into the wild blue yonder,” a line from a popular song.
