After the inaugural Optifest was held in June 2022 at Bay Court Park, this year’s free event will be held behind Renaissance High School, 6558 Waldon Road, next Saturday, Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
And according to Clarkston Area Optimist Club President Michelle Carson, the location isn’t all that has been changed for 2023.
“This year, we decided to put a ‘Back to School’ spin on our event,” said Carson. “We want to celebrate our JOI Clubs and promote growth going into our next school year. Each year, members of our local adult Optimist Club help promote JOI Clubs (Junior Optimist International) within our Clarkston Community Schools by advising JOI Clubs, which are held in each of their 11 buildings, always the ultimate goal. These clubs are independent of one another, yet they may participate in several programs that Optimist International offers as incentives to assist in the success of their school clubs.”
JOI Clubs usually attract students as young as four on up to fifth grade, said Carson. Activities are voted upon by their membership and advisors assist to make sure their club members’ efforts are realized. Following elementary school, students move on to the Middle School, Junior High and Clarkston High School JOI Clubs.
“Program goals change each year depending on the clubs’ membership, and their challenges increase to meet their potential,” Carson said. “Clarkston also uses Optimist International incentives to assist our students and/or memberships that want to rise above the norm. Leadership skills begin to emerge as these clubs work together for their common goal to achieve their desired result. Many alumni from our past Clarkston JOI Clubs have met their challenge and have done well in the international arena, within the Junior Optimist International organization. Clarkston has also had officers beyond our chapter programs.”
Recently, Clarkston members have participated as state and international officers. Many have also attended state and international conventions making lifelong friendships.
At next weekend’s Optifest, the event will feature DJ entertainment, a bicycle safety clinic, games, bounce houses, hot dogs and brats, and a pie eating contest.
