Great Lakes Burn Camp for Burn Injured Children received $8,500 thanks to golfers at the Springfield Township Firefighters Association Golf Outing.
“We had an idea to do something for charity,” said Kevin Holznagle, Springfield Township firefighter who helped organize the event. “It hasn’t been done around here in a long time. It came together really good.”
Also helping out were Denyann Holznagle, Austin and Deena Miner, Claire Moore, and Karen and Jim Holznagle.
Twenty-two teams, about 86 golfers, raised more than $12,000 at the Aug. 25 event at Springfield Oaks. The event also benefited the Fuller family of Davisburg.
The camp for burn-injured children ages 6-17 is free because of events like this, said Mike Longenecker, camp director
“It’s really important for the kids to get together to meet, play, heal, and grow together, where no one stares at them,” Longenecker said. “It’s good for the kids. They’ve all been through tragedy.”
Businesses including Smith’s Disposal and Recycling, Byers Wrecker and Service, and Abtech of Waterford contributed prizes and cash donations.
