“Independence officials get bigger raises than anticipated” The Independence Township supervisor, clerk and treasurer received a bigger raise than they expected at the township board meeting. In a memo to board members, Supervisor Dale Stuart recommended around a three percent increase for everyone.
“NFL teacher of the year had made difference in many lives” Clarkston resident Hal Farah, a language arts teacher at Waterford Kettering High School, scored a touchdown with his students as he was named the 2002 National Football League Teacher of the Year, after being nominated by Chicago Bears quarterback Jim Miller.
“Fogg’s hat trick leads icers past Waterford Mott 8-2” Forward Mike Fogg notched a hat trick as the Clarkston Varsity Hockey team posted a 8-2 win over Waterford Mott.
25 years ago – 1993
“First ‘snow day’” Clarkston was among 150 schools in the state to close due to inclement weather which included freezing rain and snow creating hazardous road conditions with more predicted for the day.
“Dog do-do crackdown possible” The Clarkston City Council discussed people who walk their dogs on the streets and sidewalks of Clarkston and don’t clean up after them would soon be breaking an ordinance. Mayor Sharron Catallo, a dog owner, described a simple method to take care of the mess as “stoop and scoop.”
“Wolves top Mott in two OTs” It didn’t look good for the Clarkston Varsity Basketball team going into the first overtime against Waterford Mott. A 3-pointer from Clarkston put the game into a second overtime, ending in a 78-73 win for the Wolves.
50 years ago – 1968
“Will compete in state Junior Miss contest” Clarkston Junior Miss Nancy Jo Weiss would be one of 47 taking part in the Junior Miss Pageant.
“Teacher on the move” Clarkston High Senior High School teacher Roger Thompson traveled as much as 250 miles a month as he visited 27 classrooms/training stations where his 39 students were receiving on the job training.
“Notes on the Orchard” The Timmons family went to Frankenmuth for the famous chicken dinners and were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Earl Timmons.
