25 years ago – 1995
“Arson suspected in barn blaze” Independence Township Fire Department responded quickly to a barn fire at 6660 Walters Road at 9 p.m., Sept. 29, but it went up in flames just as quick. “By the time our guys crossed I-75 it was already going,” said Chief Gar Wilson. Arson was suspected.
“Musician finds harmony in the skies” Gene Grier decided for his 53rd birthday he would go sky diving. The Clarkston resident had several careers in music including publishing, teaching and writing, always hoped to pursue the challenge.
“Parks advocate lives on through nature center” Relatives of the late Lewis E. Wint, as well as area residents, had a living memorial to the caring contributions Wint made to Oakland County Parks as ground broke for a 4,300-square-foot expansion at the Independence Oaks Nature Center, which was renamed the Lewis E. Wint Nature Center.

50 years ago – 1970
“Meet candidates” The Clarkston Jaycees planned to have a candidates’ night in mid-October which included local candidates for the position of supervisor, clerk, treasurer and trustee. Each one would share why they could be elected and the public could ask questions.
“Wolverines make strong start” The Clarkston Junior High Wolverines started their 1970 season with a 28-8 victory over the Sashabaw Junior High Cougars in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
“Around town” Mrs. Richard Brondyke designed and crocheted a bridal gown for her sister, Anne Marie McDuffie, to wear when she became the bride of Richard Andrew Perry. Rites were performed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rochester, Sept. 25.

75 years ago – 1945
“Library open Wednesday afternoons” The elementary school library board met and decided the library would be open every Wednesday afternoon starting in mid-October.
“Clarkston locals” Mrs. Floyd Terry, who celebrated her birthday the Sunday prior, was the guest of honor at a family gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Terry in Drayton Plains.
“Our boys and girls in service” Sgt. A Gerald Davies, former Clarkston resident, returned to his home from overseas. For 18 months he was with the 91st Infantry in Africa and Italy.
