25 years ago – 1996
“Enrollment continues to grow” The year’s fall enrollment counts for Clarkston Community Schools were in, and as expected, the numbers were up. The surprise was the numbers didn’t grow at the elementary level.
“Budget adoption delayed” Though it was a big item on the agenda, Independence Township Board of Trustees decided to table adoption of the 1997 budget after supervisor Dale Stuart said a board member requested further discussion.
“Boys, girls beat Adams in dual meet” Clarkston Boys and Girls Cross Country teams delivered a double whammy to Rochester Adams. In two close matches, the girls beat Adams, 26-29 with Kristin Maine leading, and so did the boys, 27-29 with David Sage leading.

50 years ago – 1971
“Go with sheriff” It was the recommendation of the Independence Township police study committee the township enter a contractural agreement with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department for police protection.
“Clarkston upsets Andover, 12-6” Clarkston Varsity Football’s powerful defense held off their opponents in the Wolves’ first victory of the season with a 12-6 win over Bloomfield Hills Andover in their Wayne-Oakland League opener.
“Around the township” Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Myers of Dvorak welcomed home new baby, Michael. Michael was also welcomed by big brother, Tommy, 3-years-old, and big sister, Marilyn, 5-years-old.

75 years ago – 1946
“Cheeseman Shop damaged by fire” As Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Cheeseman passed the Cheeseman Ice Cream Shop on Main Street about 11:30 p.m, Hugh noticed the night light was not burning. On investigation a fire had broken out in the freezer units and spread on on account of construction on the outside of the units. The loss was estimated at about $1,500.
“Green Acres sold” Green Acres Inn was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. William Evers of Detroit. They intended to make a few changes and it would be ready to serve the public soon.
“Clarkston locals” Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Marshall and daughter, Marsha Anne, left for Auburndale, Fla., to visit Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Warden and daughter, Carol Lynn. Some of the Marshall clan was already in Florida for the happy reunion for the first time in several years.
