25 years ago – 1997
“New fire hall opens” After months of waiting, the Independence Township Fire Department moved into its new digs on Citation Drive. The new department headquarters is also the new home of Station One and will also house the Oakland County Sheriff’s Independence substation.
“Reading lifts the spirit” Springfield Plains Elementary kicked off March is Reading Month with an assembly to introduce the month’s event. The kids had their first celebrity reader of the month – Rich Strenger, former offensive lineman for the Detroit Lions. He read “Horton Hatches the Egg” at the assembly.
“Ladies capture fourth district title in five years” The Clarkston Varsity Volleyball won the District 21 championship as the Wolves defeated Lakeland Eagles in the district finals.

50 years ago – 1972
“Mill pond unsafe” There would be swimming in Clarkston’s Mill Pond in the summer. A County Health Department official said the area would be posted to warn of higher pollution they found in a testing program the prior summer.
“Cougars win Brighton tournament” The Sashabaw Cougar ninth grade basketball team rolled to their fourth straight win and the Brighton Tournament Championship by defeating Milford, 58-56.
“Around the township” Clarkston Village Players went on tour for the month as Pete Rose and Nancy Frady starred in the fourth act of “You Know I Can’t Hear You When the Water’s Running” in Berkley.

75 years ago – 1947
“Scouts and dads attend banquet” One hundred and ten fathers and sons enjoyed an excellent dinner when the Boy Scouts and Cubs of Troop 49 and Explorer Scouts of Post 49 attended the annual Father and Son banquet in the Methodist Church parlor.
“Hilltopper” Mr. Beattie, the local Ford dealer, addressed the Clarkston economics class concerning his occupation. He shared during his high school days he didn’t intend to become a Ford dealer. He had wanted to be a farmer.
“Former resident goes to California” Mrs. Gertrude Chamberlain of Auburn Heights, formally of Clarkston, was the guest of honor at a farewell party given by sister, Mrs. C.M. Young and her brothers, Fred, Joe and Frank Suppus. She left for La Habra, California on Feb. 28.
