For the fifth consecutive year, Clarkston and Lake Orion left the field last Friday with no loss, no win – just a tie.
Both teams finished 80 minutes of play with zero goals scored on either side.
“It was a really close game,” said senior Lindsey Renkiewicz about her last home game against the Dragons. “Both teams were skilled. It was a real aggressive game.
“I am proud of them,” said Sarah Wasilk, head coach for Clarkston Girls Varsity Soccer. “It’s disappointing to tie. We have been joking about it. It is a great rivalry game and we look forward to it every year.”
Lake Orion opened with possession and made their first attempt on the net 12 minutes into the game which senior goaltender Katie Miller stopped and sent back onto the field.
The Lady Wolves had some close opportunities to score in the last 15 minutes of the first half. They were denied, ending the first half at zero and both teams with one shot on the net.
When the second half opened, the Lady Dragons were quick to take control and hold onto possession.
They tested defense a few times and each time continued to be denied.
“We played deeper today,” Wasilk said about defense. “They had speed up top and we did a nice job of reading the play. They had us more on our heels in the second half. Lake Orion definitely made some changes and came out strong.”
When defense wasn’t blocking the Dragons, most of the play and control was in the midfield.
“I was happy with my midfield,” said Wasilk. “We played a little tight at the end. I was going to make some changes at half time but I never know what he (Dragons’ coach Randy McCoy) is going to do. We played it safe since we had such a great half. It was a well played game on both sides.”
Miller had three saves for the night.
“She had an outstanding game,” Wasilk added. “She had some amazing saves. She had one of her better games. She did great. I was very proud of her.”
Renkiewicz added what helped the team during the game was the communication.
“We talked and communicated well together as a team,” she smiled.
Clarkston tied their game against North Farmington on April 23, 0-0. Miller made three saves during the game.
The Lady Wolves opened the week at Farmington on Tuesday for their OAA White league game.
“Farmington was our first game,” said Wasilk. “They have changed and we have changed so it is hard to say.”
They host Bloomfield Hills Lahser on Thursday. They head to Oxford on Friday, 105 Pontiac Street. They are home on Tuesday against Andover.
“Lahser we tied before and we will see Oxford for the first time,” Wasilk added.
“We move forward and build as a team,” said Renkiewicz. “We set higher goals for ourselves and hopefully achieve them.”
JV begins at 5:30 p.m., varsity follows.
