Wolves shared a handshakes and a hug with each of their teammates and coaches as they had their last post-game talk for the season. They finished on Saturday afternoon in the MHSAA Semifinals in a 13-1 loss against Oxford.
“It is just baseball,” said Clarkston Boys Varsity Baseball Head Coach Phil Price. “We had a lot of water and it just was not a good day. I wish I knew the answer.”
The Wildcats led after scoring three runs at the top of the third inning.
Sophomore DJ Zezula opened the bottom of the third inning hitting a double and the next two at bat juniors Alex Peck and Sean Martens also hit. When the fourth batter senior Nick Mazzone arrived to the plate the bases were loaded.
He hit a single bringing one runner in, putting the score 3-1. The score remained there as they closed the inning.
During the next two innings Oxford scored ten runs to end the game in the sixth inning.
Price added he told the players to remember how they played during the season – not how they finished in the final game.
“We got frustrated and we didn’t compete,” he added. “We made six errors. You just can’t play when you have six errors.
The boys finished the season with an 24-6 overall record and tying for the OAA Red league title.
“It was a wonderful season,” said Price. “We had a great year. Our kids came to compete everyday. We tied for the league title which we haven’t done for years. It was really a good season for us. We had a great year with kids.”
The team loses eight seniors – Zachary Altpeter, Nick Mazzone, Jacob O’Berry, Jordan Robak, Kyle Savoie, Weston Seilaff, Ryan Slaughter and Eric Tait.
“They had great leadership,” Price added.
