Block grants OK’d for senior busing

Clarkston City Council voted unanimously to direct $6,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds to the Independence Township senior center transportation program.
The money will be used in the center’s transportation program for residents over 55 years of aged, as well as disabled adults, said senior center Director Barbara Rollin.
“We take them wherever they need to go,” Rollin said at the Oct. 24 public hearing on the federal block grant funds.
The program is also funded by SMART, grants, and the Bucks for Buses fund raiser, which raised $12,000 this year.
“The center is growing by leaps and bounds. Our transportation program is very important to us,” she said. “We gave over 4,000 total, one-way rides in the village and Independence Township so far.”
They will buy two new buses this year, with three more new buses next year, she said.
The city has been alternating between the senior center and Clarkston Area Youth Assistance. Last year’s funds went to Youth Assistance.
