Boys track off and running

With the start of the track regular season just around the corner, Clarkston Coach Walt Wyniemko took a selection of his 70 plus runners to the Saginaw Valley Indoor Meet on March 24.
‘We didn’t take a lot of people we just took some of the team. It gave us a chance to look at some people in different roles,? Wyniemko said.
The Wolves ended up in seventh place out of 12 teams on the day. The best finish of the day came in the 400 relay as senior Brad Gale, junior Matt Alexander, senior Tyler Sharette and senior Greg Knappe took second place.
Sharette, Gale, Knappe also teamed with sophomore Erik Thompson for a third place finish in the 200 relay.
Stand out individual performances included a long jump of 19?1.5?, good for fifth place by Thompson. Thompson also took sixth in the 60-yard sprint.
As with their success at Saginaw, Wyniemko expects the 21 seniors currently on the team’s roster to make an impact this season.
‘We have a lot of seniors and if you are going to win, seniors play a key role in that,? Wyniemko said.
Boys track opens their season against Rochester Adams at home on April 6. Wyniemko hopes the team’s identity is clearly defined prior to the first race.
‘We have to find out what we’re made of and who we are,? Wyniemko said.
‘We have talent in our sprinters. Field events will be key to putting us in a good position to win going into the running segment of meets.?
To help craft the team’s image Clarkston has a scrimmage scheduled for March 29.
‘We want to put people in the right position. The scrimmage will give us another chance to do that,? Wyniemko said.
In terms of competition for the league title, Wyniemko expects a tough meets against Southfield (away, 4/11), Lake Orion (home, 4/27) and Pontiac Northern (home, 5/2). Lake Orion also hosts the league meet on May 23.
Wyniemko feels Southfield will be well rounded, Northern will feature talented sprinters and Lake Orion should feature strong distance runners.
