Due to the extreme dry conditions, the Independence Township Fire Department is implementing a temporary ban on all open burning and recreational burning activities within Independence Township and the City of the Village of Clarkston, effective as of June 7.
According to the data updated as of June 5 by the National Drought Mitigation Center, the southeast region of Michigan, including Independence Township and the City of the Village of Clarkston, is currently experiencing severe to extreme drought conditions, resulting in a high fire danger classification.
“We understand open burning may be a common activity for some residents, but it is necessary to take proactive measures to mitigate the risk of wildfires and protect the welfare of our community, Independence Township said in a statement. “We are asking for your cooperation and understanding until the burning ban is lifted.”
A ban is also in effect for Springfield Township, enacted two weeks ago.
