Cheer leads to stage

Cameron Brosky plays soccer, softball and skis but it was while she was cheerleading her skills caught some attention.
Rebecca Girard Smoker, the state director for Miss Michigan, saw Brosky cheering at the Bailey Lake Elementary Talent Show and asked her to do the pageant.
It led to Brosky, a fourth-grader, winning the 2015 Miss Pre-Teen Michigan United States at the Miss Michigan United States Pageant, March 22.
“I was just shocked,” Brosky said about when she received the crown and won the title. “I thought ‘this is literally awesome.’ I couldn’t wait until nationals. It was so exciting. It was so much fun.”
“I am really proud of her,” said her mom, Stephanie, adding Cameron being able to win the title and be able to do her community service was an important aspect for them.
Each contestant talked about their community service platform and Cameron spoke about the Michigan Humane Society. Cameron won the Beauty with a Purpose Award for having the best speech.
“I chose it because I just love animals,” she smiled. “I want to help them. If I win at nationals I get to go around the United States helping my community service platform.”
She added she included tidbits of information, for example how over 1,000 animals are saved from neglectful situations each year. She also included how proud she is to help the Michigan Humane Society.
“I think it is very important we give animals the love they need,” Camerson said. “I said animals can’t speak for themselves – we have to speak for them.”
The Michigan Humane Society is special for Cameron and her family because they own a dog they rescued two years ago.
“She sleeps with me sometimes,” Cameron said. “I play with her outside and take her on a lot of walks. When we come home from school she is just jumping on us – she is excited.”
Besides discussing her community service platforms, Cameron and other participants wore a patriotic outfit and an evening gown.
The Miss Michigan United States Pageant is the first pageant Cameron participated in and when she received the call she didn’t know if she wanted to do it.
“We got the phone call and they asked do you want to compete. ‘Well’ummmm’maybe….’ Then, when I realized what I was going to do and figured out what I was going to do I felt way more comfortable,” Cameron said.
“I interviewed with her and then she said you are perfect, you can compete,” Cameron added.
Before the winners were announced Cameron was standing with Little Miss as the older contestants answered their questions.
“I was watching and saying I want to do that. I hope I win at nationals so I can compete at another one. It was just really fun,” she smiled.
Now she heads to the national competition which is held in Washington, D.C., July 3-5. During this competition the interview will take place on the stage in front of an audience.
Until then she will spend time doing her community service as well as other community events for Miss Pre-Teen Michigan. She also starts softball and soccer in the spring.
