Cheer squad advances to regionals

It’s on to regionals for the varsity cheer squad following a third place finish during districts at Davison High School on Saturday, Feb. 18.
Oxford finished with 711.8104 points, five-and-a-half points behind second place Herbert Henry Dow High School.
Davison captured the district title with 723.5866 points. The Wildcats started strong by placing fourth after round one with 216.1 points. Following round two, the Wildcats moved up the leaderboard as they climbed to second with 432.8104 points.
‘We’ve been working really hard the last two weeks on our round one and two, and I think we had our best round one and two performances all season,? varsity co-coach Shari Russell said. ‘So we are excited about that.?
Heading into round three, Oxford held onto second by one point over Herbert Henry Dow and six points over Bay City Central.
In round three, Oxford posted a 281.0, but a couple minor miscues cost the Wildcats two points. However, Herbert Henry Dow finished round three with 286.4 points and leapfrogged the Wildcats for second place.
Russell was pleased with the finish due to the improvement in score and placement from district’s last year.
‘We are really happy,? she said. ‘We knew the competition would be close going in. So we are really proud of how we did with our rounds. The excitement and energy they brought was better than it ever had been.?
She said the goal going into regionals was to walk away with their best performance of the season.
‘We really want to end strong for our seniors. We want to feel like we peaked and this is the best we can do and to go out really strong,? Russell said.
