Icers are counting down to the Winterfest at Comerica Park on Wednesday where they will face their rivals, Lake Orion at 10:30 p.m.
“It is under the lights and will be exciting for everyone,” said Clarkston Hockey Coach Bryan Krygier.
“I know it is a late game but it is still worth going to. The guys are looking forward to it. The parents are looking forward to it. Plus, it is an outdoor game. It is like a structured pond game. Plus, we are playing our big rival. It steps it up to a bigger level for us.”
The boys are planning to use their two wins from last week to add fuel to the game against Lake Orion.
The most recent win occurred Saturday when the Wolves shut out Grand Haven, 6-0.
Jacob LaPorte began the scoring just 34 seconds into the game when he took a shot on the net to the left of the goalie and snuck it in.
“It was big,” Krygier smiled. “He beat the guy to the ice. He beat the guy to the puck. He put a pretty hard shot on the net and it went in. It is always a good start when you get the first goal.”
Eric Matynowski assisted on the goal and on the second goal which was made with 1:10 left in the first period by Garrett Polish.
They opened the second period with a goal from Roman Reiner. Carter Rea passed the puck behind him to Reiner in which he took a shot on the net. It bounced back out and Reiner took another shot, this time putting it in with 95 seconds into the period. Polish also assisted on the goal.
The boys added two more goals before the period closed with one from Drew Terry with an assist from Dane Pipia with 9:44 remaining. Another one came from LaPorte with an assist from Chase Wiedemann with 22 seconds left.
“We kept the pressure on them,” Krygier added.
The final goal for the night came from Drake Gentile who scored with just two minutes remaining with help from Wiedemann and LaPorte.
Goalie Jack Viazanko made 25 saves in the shut out.
“He played well in the net,” Krygier. “He made some pretty big saves. It helped us in the defensive zone. We worked hard, we played well and we deserved to win.”
The boys first win in the week was against Waterford United where the boys closed the game a few minutes early when Weidemann scored the ninth goal putting the score 9-1, Dec. 11.
Weidemann and Polish led the scoring with two goals each. Polish assisted on three goals during the night.
Kyle Cuthrell, Rea, LaPorte, Reiner and Matynowski each scored one goal. LaPorte, Rea and Joe Popp had two assists during the game.
“We pressured them, we got a lot of shots and once we got our first goal they all started going in,” Krygier added.
Goalie Nick Surovec made 14 saves in the net.
The Wolves host their Christmas Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Detroit Skate Club. Clarkston opens against Macomb Dakota at 5 p.m. followed by Novi against Davison at 7 p.m.
“Dakota is a pretty good team,” Krygier added. “They have a solid team. Novi has a solid team. Davison has a decent team as well. They have a goaltender and a few forwards who can put the puck in the net. Anything can happen but hopefully we can get past Dakota.”
The hockey action continues on Saturday with the consolation game at 12:30 p.m. and the championship game at 3 p.m. at 888 Denison Court in Bloomfield Hills.
