Ben Snider set the ball on the field as five players from Detroit Catholic Central created a wall in front of their net against his free kick.
Snider took his shot, and the ball soared over the wall and into the top net to tie the score with DCC with 10:39 left in the first half during the Wolves home game last Thursday.
Clarkston took another shot on the net seven minutes later but were denied.
Snider kicked the ball again, and the goalie stepped out of the net to stop it. Brandon Reynolds ran forward for the opportunity and put the boys in the lead with 21.9 seconds to go in the first half, 2-1.
Both were scoreless the second half as the Wolves won the game, 2-1.
“We didn’t play our best game,” said Clarkston Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Chuck Lawhorn. “But we were able to put in a few goals and sneak past DCC. They were a pretty tall and physical team and won a lot of balls out of the air. We were able to hang on. Even though we didn’t score a lot of goals we played better in the second half.”
The Wolves held on in the last five minutes as DCC put on the pressure and attempted to score more to bring themselves back up.
“The guys hung in there, and we were able to come away with a win,” said Lawhorn. “It was a solid win. It was a good week.”
Goalie Harry Smith made eight saves against DCC.
The boys opened the week with a win over Rochester Adams, 3-2. Brad Schultz scored two goals, and Jordan Kieft scored one with assists from Joe DeFinis and Mitch Menard.
“Anytime you can beat Rochester Adams and DCC in the same week it is a positive,” said Lawhorn. “Hopefully we can carry the momentum into this week.”
The boys played Troy on Tuesday and host Stoney Creek on Thursday.
“Troy always moves the ball well,” said Lawhorn. “They are going to be a solid team this year. We will have a challenge. Stoney Creek is always a big game. They have a few injuries over there as well. We will see what happens.”
