Lady Kickers finished their spring season on June 4 in the final round of MHSAA District playoffs.
They lost to Rochester Adams, 5-0.
The Lady Highlanders scored four goals in the first half and scored one more before the game concluded.
The road to the final round of district playoffs began in Oxford on May 31 as the girls went against the Lady Wildcats for a 3-2 win.
“I thought for us we got off to a very slow start,” said Clarkston Girls Varsity Soccer Head Coach Sarah Wasilk, referring to Oxford’s lead.
Oxford grabbed the lead in the first half with two goals before Lisa Lyons put Clarkston on the board on her shot on the net with 4:26 left.
“Oxford caught us on our heels a little bit,” said Wasilk. “We weren’t ready when the clock started. Oxford was and it showed.”
The tempo changed when Lindsey Adams sunk her kick into the south corner three minutes into the last half.
The Lady Wolves defense and goalie Jackie Gipe blocked Oxford from scoring again to pull ahead in the game.
Gipe saved a shot with 26 minutes remaining and the possession gave the girls a boost as they headed to Oxford’s net. They made a shot on goal.
It didn’t go in but Lyons went for one more attempt and slid the ball into the net for the girls’ 3-2 lead.
“We really showed up to play and did much better,” said Wasilk. “We worked together more, talked to each other more and scored two goals. It was a balance of offense and defense because we started to win 50/50 balls, which we weren’t doing in the first half. We were losing a lot of the possession.”
Andrea Butler had two assists and Caitlin Kirby added one assist. Gipe made 11 saves.
“Caitlyn, Lindsay, Andrea and Lisa had a great game,” Wasilk added. “They were intense for the entire 80 minutes where some of the rest took awhile to get there.”
The girls moved on to the next round to play Waterford Kettering on June 2 – which was also prom for the Lady Wolves.
“All my seniors and my juniors are dedicated to play so I certainly hope we show up to play and beat whoever we go against,” Wasilk said before the game.
Clarkston put their focus into the game, winning after two 10-minute overtime periods. The game clincher came from Andrea Dumais, 2-1.
They controlled the ball during the game but it was Kettering to get on the board first and held onto the lead for the majority of the first half.
A shot from Adams equaled the playing field when she put a goal in with 5:26 left in the first half.
Clarkston moved on against Adams for their sixth time in 13 seasons the two had faced each other. The Lady Wolves’ goal to beat Adams for the regional title ended after the 5-0 loss.
The loss to Adams was avenged as Troy on June 7 when the Lady Colts put them out of the running for state finals with a 3-0 win in the MHSAA Regional semi-finals.
The team finished the season 9-8-3 loses nine players who graduated on June 6 – Gina Bollini, Andrea Butler, Amanda Ejups, Jackie Gipe, Kaylee Liddle, Samantha Johnson, Emily Roan, Clair Viazanko and Jenny Zawadzki.
