Conviction in murder of deputy

Christopher Berak, 24, of Macomb County was convicted, Nov. 1, of murdering Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy Eric Overall.
Overall, a deputy with the Brandon Substation, was killed on Nov. 23, 2017, trying to stop Berak’s vehicle. Berak was fleeing law enforcement from Lapeer and headind south on M-15 towards Clarkston when Overall put out stop sticks near Seymour Lake Road. At around 12:30 a.m., Berak’s vehicle veered off the road and onto the shoulder, striking the deputy.
“Reliving the case has not been easy on anyone including Eric’s family and loved ones. I hope his wife Sonja and son Ken find some peace and solace now that his killer has been held responsible,” said Sheriff Michael Bouchard in a statement to the press. “Eric’s ‘Never Quit’ mantra represented everyone’s dedication to obtaining justice in this case.”
A jury found Berak guilty of premeditated murder in the first degree and murder of a police officer following trial and deliberation.
Overall also served as a Brandon School District liaison officer.
Judge Leo Bowman set his sentencing for Dec. 12, 2019, at 3 p.m.
