A truck crane at a construction site at the corner of Baldwin and Maybee Roads overturned on April 3, crushing a truck and causing downed wires and a power outage for about 1,100 residents in the area.
An Oakland County Sheriff’s Department deputy was responding to a call of downed wires in the roadway on Baldwin at the entrance to Sycamore Creek Apartments, when he saw the overturned truck crane on Maybee Road. The crane had fallen over, snapping utility wires and crushing a front of a 1999 Dodge Durango that was parked on the south shoulder, unoccupied and blocking eastbound traffic.
According to an OCSD report, no one was injured in the accident. A 33-year-old Eastpointe man working for Lutz Roofing said he was using the crane to lift some plywood on top of the bank under construction when the crane fell over.
The man said when it started to fall, he jumped off the opposite side. Support to the right side of the truck might not have been set properly, as it had been moved during the day to let trucks by. The operator might have forgotten to set it back properly, according to the report.
Traffic signals were out at the intersection of Baldwin and Maybee as a result of the accident, which was also responsible for the wires down at the Sycamore Creek Apartments. Detroit Edison was able to restore power to all but about 100 customers on Saturday evening.
