At the request of Clarkston City Council, City Manager Jonathan Smith reached out to the owners of Village Dental at 55 S. Main to ask the status of their reconstruction work.
A double-tandem gravel hauler veered off northbound M-15, hit two vehicles, and smashed into the dental office on April 20, 2018. No one was seriously injured in the collision.
“They tell me that they’re excited about getting the reconstruction started, but that it took longer than expected to get all the needed subcontractors setup as well as the time to obtain the necessary permits,” Smith said. “They’re currently ordering materials for an estimated January start of the demolition and reconstruction.”
A southbound semitruck on M-15 veered off the road, hitting vehicles and smashing through a restaurant dining area before landing in a ditch, this past Nov. 4. This past Oct. 4, a car ran over a street sign and destroyed a utility pole on M-15 at Robertson Court.
Options for City Council to consider include extending the 30 mph zone farther north of downtown, and taking ownership of M-15 from Michigan Department of Transportation, Smith said.
The city might then be able to add speed-control items and restrict truck traffic, but would also have to pay to maintain the road. There would also have to be a joint agreement with Independence Township, he said.
