Six federal grants received by the Road Commission for Oakland County include several projects in the Clarkston area.
A $600,000 grant will help construct a roundabout at the intersection of Sashabaw and Oakhill roads at the border between Independence and Brandon townships. Estimated project cost is $1.5 million.
An estimated grant of $166,673 will help apply a high-friction surface treatment on a large curve on Baldwin Road west of the Baldwin/Indianwood/Coats roundabout on the border between Independence and Orion townships. Estimated project cost is $185,193.
A $187,257 grant will be used to install centerline “mumble strips” on nine sections of roads, including Andersonville Road between Davisburg Road and Big Lake Road, Big Lake Road between the north and south legs of Andersonville Road, and Andersonville Road between Big Lake Road and White Lake Road, all in Springfield Township.
“Mumble strips” are less noisy than “rumble strips,” but alert drivers they are out of lane. Estimated project cost is $208,064.
The projects also include upgrading 396 traffic signals at 45 intersections by installing reflective backplates on the signal heads throughout the county, estimated grant amount, $176,040; estimated total cost, $195,600. The six grants total more than $1.4 million for 2021 projects. The federal Local Safety Program provides funds for local road projects in areas where there have a been a concentration of serious-injury and fatal vehicle crashes, and other road-safety work.
