Goodrich tackles Chesaning tourney

It was a mixed bag for the Goodrich wrestling team at the Chesaning Tournament Jan. 10.
The Martians went 2-3 in the tournament, winning matches against Saginaw Nouvel and Carrollton while dropping contests against Pinconning, Chesaning and Central Montcalm.
Erik Fernelius and Garrett Higdon anchored the Martians that day, both winning all their matches to go 5-0 in the tournament.
In the opening matchup against Pinconning, the Martians fell 55-24. Four Martian grapplers won their matches: Fernelius (152) won by default; A.J. Harmon (215) pinned David Bishop in 1:59; Brian Grzecki (103) won by default; and Higdon (112) pinned Zach Lupo in 29 seconds.
The Martians rebounded with a 39-27 win against Nouvel. The triumphant Goodrich wrestlers were as follows: Kyle Fletcher (160) pinned Jim Cooture in 1:07; Barrett Johnson (215) pinned Pete Oskuarek in 2:44; Harmon (275) pinned Chris Cassetta in 4:26; Grzecki (103) won by default; Higdon (112) pinned Joe Perez in 22 seconds; Jason Fischer (119) pinned Kyle Barringer in 1:09; and Fernelius (152) won a 10-7 decision against Josh Fick.
Against host Chesaning, the Martians had a tougher time, dropping a 52-28 match. Four Goodrich grapplers won their matches: Fernelius (152) pinned Marty Witt in 2:23; Johnson (189) won an 11-2 decision against Aldon Dugalech; and Higdon (103) and Billy Feldman (130) won by default.
The Martians then dropped a hard-fought 35-33 matchup against Central Montcalm. The following Goodrich wrestlers proved triumphant: Fischer (112) pinned Wayne Bogue in 4:30; Josh Foerster (135) won by default; Fernelius (152) pinned Rudy Smith in 4:44; Fletcher (160) defeated Brent Johnson by a 9-4 decision; Barrett Johnson (189) pinned Matt Sooy in 59 seconds; and Higdon (103) pinned Mark Witzel in 29 seconds.
The Martians capped their day with a 41-29 victory against Carrollton. Leading the way for Goodrich were: Higdon (112), who pinned Dan Torrez in 23 seconds; Fischer (119), who pinned Chris Scharich in 5:25; Feldman (130), Foerster (135) and Fernelius (152), who won their matches by default; Fletcher (160), who pinned Pat Hayes in 1:08; and Johnson (189), who pinned Jeremy O’Keefe in 30 seconds.
The Martians were on the losing end of their two matches Jan. 7, losing to host Capac 45-35 and Yale 42-40. Higdon (112), Fischer (119), Fletcher (160), Johnson (215) and Harmon (275) won both their matches that day.
Goodrich returns to action Jan. 21 when they travel to LakeVille for a 6 p.m. match.
