Grapplers have five-match winning streak

The Oxford varsity wrestlers have had a great five-match winning streak over the past week putting their record at 11-6 overall.
On Jan. 7, the grapplers faced off at home against New Lothrop and Grand Blanc. The Wildcats lost to Lothrop, the Division 4 defending state champions, 26-41. Winning for Oxford were Ron Mantel, 125; Scott Hyder, 140; K. Nieporte, 160; Kam Mueller, 171; and Kyle Rowley, 189.
The Wildcats won against Grand Blanc 72-12. Almost every Oxford wrestler won their match with a pin.
On Saturday, Jan. 10, Oxford took first place with 5-0 in the five-team Avondale Team Competition. The Wildcats defeated Ypsilanti Lincoln 50-15, Livonia Clarenceville 57-18, Mt. Clemens 63-15, Avondale 61-16 and Farmington 64-9.
Going 5-0 for the Wildcats were Michael Upshur, 103; Mike May, 119; Ron Mantel, 125; Matt Duncan, 130; Shawn Gall, 135; Mike Potter 152; Kyle Rowley, 189; and Kyle Oliver, 215.
“We’ve won our last six straight,” said Coach Paul McDevitt. “We’re about where I hoped we would be at this time of the year.”
The Wildcats next match is not until Jan. 21 against Imlay City and Flint Central.
“We’ve got a couple week’s here to keep working,” said McDevitt. “We still have some things to improve on, but I think we can get there.”
