Homecoming turns sour for Bescoe, Martian softball team

Goodrich varsity softball coach Rick Bescoe’s first game back at Brandon as the Martians? coach did not go the way the team hoped.
The Martians fell victim to a five-run first inning at the hands of the Blackhawks, who earned a 5-3 win in their April 27 contest.
Bescoe, formerly an assistant to Brandon varsity softball coach Don Peters, said the Martians? fielding woes in the opening frame were uncharacteristic of the team.
‘They knew I came from Brandon and maybe they put too much pressure on themselves, wanting to win it for me,? he said. ‘Don and I are good friends. It was a case of the jitters.?
Brandon pitcher Jill Perry again had a solid outing, striking out nine Martians to pick up the win. Jessica Liebner had two hits and two RBI each for the Blackhawks, while Annmarie Solley and Mallory Martin each contributed two hits.
Ashley Short had two hits and an RBI in a losing cause for the Martians, while Tara Garman and Jenni Brothers each added an RBI.
The Martians rebounded in their second game of the day to defeat Flint Powers 8-3, improving their mark to 12-2 overall and 9-1 in the Genesee Area Conference Red Division.
Short again had a good game for the Martians, chipping in with two hits and two RBI, while Julie Owen also had two hits and made ‘a great play up the middle? defensively, Bescoe said.
Alisha Bergeron added two RBI for the Martians.
Brandon’s second game of the day did not go as well, as the Blackhawks were edged 2-1 by Armada, leaving Brandon at 6-6 on the season. Perry struck out seven in a losing cause for the Blackhawks.
