Senior Carly Giroux caught the pass from sophomore Kayla Russell and sank her first 3-pointer within the first 29 seconds of the season.
The momentum only escalated for Clarkston Varsity Girls Basketball as they hosted Walled Lake Western, Dec. 3.
The Lady Wolves kept Western scoreless for two quarters to win the game, 57-9.
‘I was happy with how we played on both ends of the floor,? said Tim Wasilk, head coach. ‘We came ready to play and played four quarters of basketball. I was happy with our effort.?
They scored 24 points in the first quarter with another 3-pointer and a basket from Giroux, six points from senior Erika Davenport and four points from junior Jessica Altene.
‘It was nice to see Carly after coming back from a ACL injury hit her first three shots down tonight,? Wasilk added. ‘All deep jump shots.?
Defense kept Walled Lake Western at bay going into the second quarter as the opponents only scored six points. The Lady Wolves put 13 points on the board to close the half, 37-6.
Wasilk added Western lost eight of their top nine players from last year’s team and have a lot of new players.
‘They are going to take a lot of bumps early,? he said. ‘I told the girls it doesn’t matter who we are going against. We have to come with the same intensity on both ends on the floor. We did that. There was no let down after the first half. We defended well. We communicated. We shut down the driving lanes. On the offensive side of the ball, we moved the ball inside and out. We had some jumpers.?
Sophomore Mariah Hood was the first to score the the Lady Wolves in the second half. Davenport scored 20 seconds later after grabbing a loose ball in Clarkston’s end of the court and speeding towards the basket with one defender trailing. The girls added ten more points and kept Western at zero.
Davenport led the team with 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and six blocks and senior Alaina Cook added ten. Hood had six points as well as four assists and three rebounds
‘Erika did a good job distributing the basketball to other people both inside and leading the break,? Wasilk added.
The Lady Wolves beat Macomb Dakota on Friday, 44-33.
‘They have a Division 1 player on their team and they beat us last year at our place,? said Wasilk before the game. ‘We have gotten better each week these first three weeks. We are just trying to take steps forward. We have some growing pains. We lost three starting guards from our team last year. We have guards ready they just have to get game experience.?
Davenport led with 27 points and had 17 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. Kacy Robinson added eight points and had four assists and two steals.
‘Jessica had a great defensive effort for us on their top player and had six rebounds as well,? Wasilk added. ‘It was a big win for us. Overall it was a great team effort. Our intensity was good. Our defensive effort was very good. What I liked about us is we played with a lot of energy in the game. Not only the people who were on the floor but the bench as well. We had a lot of kids step up to play minutes for us. It was their first taste of playing on varsity this week and they have done a good transition.?
The Lady Wolves played Lake Orion on Tuesday.
‘They are our rival so we will be ready to go,? Wasilk said before the game. ‘We are excited. They are always well-coached and a good team.?
They travel to Dearborn Heights on Saturday against Chicago Bogan High School in the Holiday Classic.
They host Southfield-Lathrup on Dec. 17. JV begins at 5:30 p.m., varsity follows.
