Spikers dominated the Grand Blanc Invitational and won it for the second consecutive year.
“I was very impressed with how the girls played,” said Girls Varsity Volleyball Coach Kelly Avenall.
“We have been working on a lot,” she added. “I was nervous about our blocking because because I didn’t think we had a strong blocking team. We blocked really well and it showed.”
The girls didn’t lose during the entire tournament. They split sets with Livonia Churchill and saw them again in the round. They defeated them 25-10 and 25-21.
“It’s really because we played a flawless defense all day,” Avenall explained. “I can’t think of one time the ball was hit to us we didn’t get to.”
The team finished the day 5-0-1, putting their record to 9-1-1.
Allison Reis had 56 digs and 36 kills.
“She played good for us all-around all day,” Avenall added.
Haley Barker stepped it up for the Lady Wolves in the server position and had 11 aces. Stephanie Marani added 20 kills and 16 blocks to the day.
The team used the tournament for preparation for their first league game they played on Tuesday against Seaholm.
“I feel like this was a really good boost to get them ready for that mentally,” said Avenall. “The tournament was a good stepping stone to our league play.”
They knew they would be going against a tough team.
“They know what they have to do when they play against tough teams to get a win,” said Avenall.
The girls head to Farmington next Tuesday for another league game.
“I tell the girls everytime we play a league match – it’s not a given,” said Avenall. “Everyone we prepare for.”
