Another telephone scam is happening locally.
A Waterford Township woman said recently she received a phone call from someone identifying himself as “Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.” The caller ID displayed a number used by the Sheriff’s Office. This is a common ploy with phone scams, known as spoofing the number.
The imposter asked the woman if she had been to Mexico or Columbia recently. The imposter also asked for the woman’s social security number, which she provided. As the conversation continued, the Waterford woman became suspicious that she was being scammed. She told the caller she would come to the Sheriff’s Office herself to continue the conversation and hung up before she provided additional personal information, or any discussion of money took place.
She was advised to contact her bank and credit card companies.
