Students entered Clarkston Junior High School and headed towards the cafeteria for breakfast.
The Junior Optimists, working with leadership students and teachers, offered cereal, muffins and bagels for the low price of $1 each from Dec. 7-9.
“We are raising money for the poor families in our school,” said Junior Optimist President Jenny Lussenhop, taking a break from pouring cereal into bowls. “It’s a fun way to raise money. Everyone likes cereal.”
She added response was great from students, even those just going to the cafeteria to chat with friends or add last minute details to homework before classes begun.
“They realize there is food here and they buy it,” she said.
Michelle Carlson, Junior Optimists advisor, said the money raise will buy gift cards for students’ families in need
Kelly Kanigowski, the school’s counselor and social worker, reported they raised $500.
“It is quit a bit less than last year,” she said. “It is a difficult year for everyone. People are just not able to donate like years past. Last year we were able to give a substantial gift card basket to five different families. We may not be able to cover the same amount but the families we can help will be pleased.”
It was a quick fundraiser, from 6:45-7:15 each day, and the popular choice for breakfast was cereal.
“The sugar cereals were a big seller for us,” said Carlson.
“It’s great to help,” said Lussenhop. “It’s fun, too. It’s cool to get the school together.”
During the holiday season, Junior Optimists also head to Independence Elementary to play games with the Alpha Club for their holiday celebration.
