Martian grapplers finish second at home meet

The Goodrich Martians varsity wrestling team finished second on Dec. 29 at their home Tournament of Champions meet. In addition to Goodrich High School wrestling teams from Hesperia, Greenville, Dundee, Highland Park, Kearsley, Clio, Swartz Creek, Lapeer West, Swan Valley, Carleton Airport, Warren Woods Tower, Brooklyn Columbia Central, Highland, Springport, Fowlerville, and New Boston Huron competed in the daylong meet.
Hesperia High School won the meet with two individual champions and 178.5 points winning the team title. The Martians were not far behind taking second with a total of 169.5 points. Greenville High School came in third with 161.5 points.
While the Goodrich team finished second at the tournament, local wrestlers Grant Overcashier and Kyler Elsworth remained unbeaten. Overcashier defeated Hesperia’s Malcolm Martin 6-4 to win the 135-pound division title, while Elsworth claimed the 189-pound title with a 7-3 win over Andrew Banas of New Boston Huron. Goodrich had a third individual champ in Kirk Britton, who defeated Saginaw Swan Valley’s Matt Beebe 7-3 in the 130-pound final.
The Goodrich Martians will compete again at 6 p.m. Jan. 9 at home against Bendle/Bentley.
