Spikers faced six tough competitors last week and came out with five wins.
They traveled to Beast of the East on Saturday where they went 3-1 for the day – beating Flushing, South Lyon and Mercy. Their lone loss was to Northville in the first round.
“It was a great tournament with a lot of good teams. Some of the top teams in the state,” said Clarkston Varsity Volleyball Coach Kelly Avenall.
“Beating Mercy was a big win. They are a great team. We lost to Northville who was a Final Four team last year and they are playing well this year, too. We lost to them by two so it could have gone either way. We played well. It was good competition.”
For the day, Brianna Frakes had 99 assists, Taylor Dellinger had 43 kills and Katie Chadwell helped with 27 kills.
The Lady Wolves also took down two OAA Red league opponents for the week – beginning with Lake Orion on Oct. 15 with a 3-1 win.
The Dragons won the first game 25-19 and began the next game with the lead. Clarkston caught up and they were neck to neck until an error by Lake Orion and a hit by Frakes led to a 27-25 victory for the Wolves.
Clarkston won the next two games 25-21 and 25-19. Dellinger had 15 kills, Kacy Robinson had 11 kills and Chadwell had eight kills and five blocks. Frakes had 32 assists.
“Beating Lake Orion is a huge win for us,” Avenall said. “They were undefeated at that point and ranked No. 2 in the state. Anytime you can beat Lake orion at their place or anywhere is a great win for us.”
They continued the week to beat Seaholm, 3-2.
“We are playing better and better against good competition,” said Avenall. “Before we weren’t able to finish. Now we are getting to the point where we are able to pull through and finish in tight matches.”
The girls played Bloomfield on Tuesday and head to Oxford on Thursday. They have already seen both teams this season. Both beat the Lady Wolves by taking a game but didn’t win the match against Clarkston.
“In order for us to be outright league champs we have to beat both of them this week,” Avenall added. “Both are tough opponents. Oxford only lost once in the league and it was to Lake Orion.”
The Lady Wolves head to Oxford High School, 745 N. Oxford Road, for their Thursday game.
JV begins at 5:30 p.m., varsity follows.
