The Oakland County Pioneer Historical Society created a calendar to mark the 200th anniversary of the formation of the county. Each day has a fact written about the county or a community in the county.
Calendars are $10 and are available at the Clarkston Independence District Library. Proceeds benefit the Oakland County Pioneer and Historical Society, which preserves and celebrates the county history, and the Moses Wisner home.
Pictures in the calendar are from the August 1916 celebration of the creation of the county.
That year, the county had a weeklong celebration in downtown Pontiac. The calendar notes the residents were eager to get a jump on the fun, using a centennial date for some early settlers arrival in 1816.
The county was actually established on March 28, 1820, by the Michigan Territorial Governor Lewis Cass, and Pontiac was designated the county seat.
At the time, the population of Oakland County was roughly 330 people. In 2020, Oakland County has a population of 1.25 million.
