The Oxford varsity volleyball team had their first Flint Metro League victory on Jan. 5 against the Brandon Blackhawks 15-2 and 15-8.
Senior Brandi Parker led the way with 10 assists, three kills, six service points and two aces. Lindsey Tarrant followed close behind with 10 service points, one ace, 16 digs and 10 kills. Senior Kristi Curtis led the way defensively with eight digs.
“The girls played strong defense, but in the end, our offense was more than they could handle,” said coach Kristi McDevitt.
The Lady Wildcats now stand 1-0 in league action and 10-2 overall.
When asked about the structure of this year’s team, McDevitt said that Brandi Parker has definitely been an asset. She described the senior as a “very versatile player.”
“I wanted to run an offense that allowed Brandi to both set and hit,” explained McDevitt.
For that to happen, the first year varsity coach needed to find someone who could match Parker’s setting abilities. Team captain Shannon Gerbe proved she was the one for the job.
“Now when Shannon is setting in the back row, Brandi is killing the ball in the front row,” said McDevitt. “It is a great balance to the offense and allows Brandi to really show her hitting skills.”
But don’t expect the Lady Wildcats offense to remain static. McDevitt still has some hidden talents honing their skills in her first-season-varsity middle hitters.
