Recreation guide on the way

Delays in the beginning stages caused a delay in delivery of the 2015/16 Independence Township Winter and Spring Recreation Guide.
The guide is available now, and can be viewed at www.itpr.org. Registration forms are available online also, but online registration is limited.
Parks, Seniors and Recreation Coordinator Tim McNiel said the guide will be available to residents soon.
‘It should be in their mailbox any day now,? he said. ‘We are already registering for some activities and classes.?
The 52-page guide includes classes and activities from January through the end of April. Online registration began Dec. 29 and all other registration begins Jan 5.
‘Early registration is important for a few reasons,” McNiel said. ‘Some classes fill up early and other classes are canceled if not enough participants sign-up.”
The guide is full of activities including youth sports and seniors activities such as Pickleball.
Safety courses including self defense skills are taught to children, adults, or the whole family can take it together. Boaters Safety, ORV Off Road Vehicle Training, both offer certification after class and requirements are met. Training and certification for beginners and health care professionals for First Aid/CPR are also available.
“The guide also includes information on rentals,? McNiel said.
Rentals include a variety of facilities at several Independence Township parks, which cover 224 acres of land. Some park facilities can be rented throughout the year, except for certain holidays, and up to a year in advance. Sign-up to grab a share in the community garden, discover numerous sponsorship and volunteer opportunities available throughout the year.
A list of local events and happenings can also be found inside the guide. The guide includes commonly asked questions, a list of parks and facilities and other information.
Registration for spring, summer and fall sports has been streamlined to make the process easier.
‘Now you can register for all of them at once rather than having to register individually like previously,? he said.
A copy of the Guide will be available at Independence Township Hall, 6483 Waldon Center Drive and Clarkston-Independence District Library at 6495 Clarkston Road.
