Clarkston City Council voted 6-0, Sept. 9, to reimburse $15,515 to Independence Township for Industrial Waste Charges.
The city collected the charges from residents, but they township did not bill the city for them. The shortfall was reported to the city by township public works Director Dave McKee this past March.
“This was entirely Independence Township’s mistake,” said City Manager Jonathan Smith. “When their rate went up, we adjusted our rates and charged residents more, but the township did not charge us.”
Independence Township buys sewer processing from Great Lakes Water Authority, and the city buys sewer processing from the township, Smith said.
A second issue presented by McKee regarding $27,492 in unbilled sewer assessment charges by the city, will be addressed later. City and township officials had a meeting on the issue with their attorneys and are still working it out, Smith said.
