It has been two years since the Wolves lost a game at home and they showed Stoney Creek how they have continued the tradition in their 20-5 win, May 1.
‘We played good,? said senior AJ Kowal. ‘It’s about ohana. We had a lot of teamwork.?
It didn’t take long for the Clarkston Boys Varsity Lacrosse team to put in their first attack as Kowal scored on the Cougar’s net 11 seconds into the game.
Stoney Creek struck back scoring two goals and taking the lead from the No. 1 ranked team in the state.
‘We sort of fell asleep,? admitted Brian Kaminskas, head coach. ‘Our tendency is to say ‘hey, we’ve got this.? Our defense fell asleep. It just wasn’t ready to start the game.?
‘We knew they thought they had a chance against us,? said Kowal. ‘We just had to try to buckle down and get goals to the net.?
And the Wolves did just that starting with a goal from junior Connor Dziewit off a pass from senior Jordan Moore.
The momentum escaladed in the final four minutes of the first quarter when the Wolves put four goals on the board with two from junior Connor Ward, one from senior Kyle O’Grady and one from Kowal.
‘Our defense fed off the offense,? Kaminskas added. ‘Those guys were on and they were pushing. Once that caught wind they were going.?
They opened the second quarter with three shots into the net within the first minutes. They built onto the score and finished the half with two more in the last minute, putting the score 14-2.
‘We wanted to have a large margin against this team,? Kowal added. ‘We knew we had to step up and show them what we are worth.?
O’Grady led the team with five goals and one assist. Ward had four goals and two assists. Kowal added three goals and Dziewit had two.
Jim McKillop, Cole Phillips, Andrew Williamson, Brandon Deatherage, Cooper Parks and Robert Hall had one goal each.
‘These guys came out to play,? Kaminskas added. ‘Anytime someone is going to play us here we are going to attack.?
The Wolves continued the week with a trip to Toronto, Canada where they lost to St. Michael’s College, 10-6.
Ward led the team with three goals. Reid Kaminski, Kowal and O’Grady added one goal each to the score.
The boys followed it with a win over Upper Canada College on Sunday, 8-6.
O’Grady led the team in the win with three goals. Kaminski, Kowal, Ward, Moore and Mitch Prock scored one goal each.
Lacrosse players throughout Clarkston play on Saturday during Game for a Cure at Clarkston High School stadium, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. as they raise money for St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Cancer Research Center in Pontiac.
The boys varsity team plays at 7 p.m. against Petoskey.
