Students light up at camp

The recycle room was a bustle of energy and excitement during Camp Invention, held July 20-23, as students entering first through sixth grade looked for the perfect component for their project.
This year’s Camp Invention curriculum was Illuminate and was inspired by some of the nation’s most brilliant minds.
Every day the students were inspired by different inventors and received a new challenge in each of their five modules. This year’s modules were Inducted, MOVE (Motion, Obstacles, Variety, Excitement), Kartwheel, Design Studio: Illuminate and I Can Invent: Next Level Gamers.
“MOVE is like a physical education module,” explained Beth Rogers, one of the directors and fifth-grade teacher from Springfield Plains Elementary. “They take traditional games and then the kids change it up. It’s all about teamwork, challenges and how to overcome challenges.”
Camp Invention encourages the students through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and is popular. Rogers added 50 percent of last year’s students returned and some have come every year the past 4-5 years. Most are from Clarkston with a few from Lake Orion and one from Canada. Ford Motor Company volunteers also visited.
